Phuket vs Krabi: Which Beaches Suit You?

Phuket and Krabi sit less than two hours apart across the Andaman Sea, yet they feel like different holidays. Both have gorgeous water and easy villa rentals, so the choice comes down to the kind of days you want. Here's how I'd help a friend decide.

The vibe: buzz or calm

Phuket is Thailand's biggest island and it wears that size proudly. There's an international airport, hundreds of restaurants, beach clubs, night markets and a beach for every mood, from the party sprawl of Patong to the quiet coves of the south. If you like the option of stepping out of your villa into a lively scene, Phuket delivers it in spades.

Krabi, on the mainland just east, is slower and greener. Ao Nang is its main hub, but the postcard spots like Railay are reached only by longtail boat, which keeps the crowds thinner and the pace gentler. Choose Krabi when you want nature and quiet over neon and nightlife.

The beaches themselves

Phuket's west-coast beaches are long, broad and sandy, ideal for sunset walks and easy swimming. The water is open sea, so it can get a little choppy in the shoulder months, but the classic Andaman blue is always there. Kata and Kamala are lovely bases if you want sand on your doorstep without the Patong crowds.

Krabi's coastline is all about drama. Towering limestone karsts rise straight out of the water, and beaches like Railay feel hemmed in by jungle cliffs. The swimming is calmer and the scenery is unforgettable, though some beaches shrink to almost nothing at high tide. This is island-hopping country, with the Phi Phi and Hong islands a short boat ride away.

Where the villas fit

Both areas have strong villa scenes but at different price points. Phuket's luxury market is deep, with hillside villas offering infinity pools and full staff, and you'll pay a premium for the polish. Krabi tends to be better value, with comfortable pool villas set back in the greenery for noticeably less per night.

My rule of thumb: pick Phuket for a first Thailand trip when you want everything within reach, and Krabi for a return visit when you already know you love the region and want to slow right down. You genuinely can't go wrong, and plenty of people do a few nights in each.
